Kenya Gatagua AA Washed
Nuance of blackberries, truffle, yoghurt and honey
The cooperative that runs Gatagua is called Kagaa Farmers Cooperative Society and was established in December 2019. Many cooperatives in Kenya have several washing stations, but Kagaa has only one so far. Kagaa is a young cooperative, but the washing station was already built in the 1960s. At that time, coffee production in Kenya was higher than it is today, so Gatagua is designed for larger volumes than the producers can deliver. It is not a problem, but only gives the cooperative the opportunity to grow.
Gatagua is at an altitude of 1,630 meters, the coffee that the producers grow grows at an altitude of 1,600-1,850 meters. The types of beans grown here are a mixture of SL with an increasing proportion of Ruiru and Batian, as these types of beans are more yielding and have a higher tolerance to frost and pests.
This is a wet processed coffee. The coffee berries are delivered to Gatagua the same day they are harvested. There, the berries are sorted by hand and in a water bath before being pulped and fermented in water overnight. The water is changed on day two and the coffee is left for another day for the pulp to loosen and the beans to become completely clean from the fruit. After the coffee beans have been washed clean, they are allowed to dry on drying tables for 2-3 weeks before they are ready for export.
